For many of those who had sisters or relatives at Eveline the Annual School magazines for 1955 to 1959 have been scanned and uploaded on to the web page of our sister school at EvelineHome.html   The 1957 magazine has a story by Rose Herbst "My first impressions of the Farm" about the simplicity of her family setting up a farm in Nyamandhlovu, no electricity or running water etc. Then the 1958 story by Janet Johnson "The house of Tomorrow" her futureistic vision (now it is reality) where all rooms were linked by a loud-speaker-device, which also connected to the kitchen, so that it was possible  to have a careful check over everything. LEST WE FORGET   (Extract from November 1919 MILTONIAN)

WORLD WAR I - Roll of Honour

J. C. Ashburner, whose photo appeared in our last issue, is now a Lieutenant in the Machine Gun Corps, in India. He had the mis-fortune to be a prisoner of war in Germany. During his internment there, along with another sub. and a colonel, he attempted to escape. They intended to make for Denmark. After having walled about 200 miles in a strange country, they were about 50 miles from the border, when the Colonel decided that it was no use going any further as they would only die of cold and starvation, so they gave themselves up to the Germans and were returned to the prisoners' camp where they were made to suffer for their indiscretion.

De Beer, Ricketts and Myburgh were Beit Scholars. Carnegie was a Beit Bursary holder and a Rhodes' scholar Myburgh was one of three 'flyers' who attacked a vastly superior German squadron. He was the only one to bring his machine back, but died two days later of his wounds Carnegie was gallantly leading on his men when he was struck by a machine gun bullet. John James Joss, Signaller, RFA, 51st Highland Division, who was reported missing on March 21st, last year, is now reported as killed in action. Signaller Joss was at an advanced observation post with another signaller. In his account of what happened the latter states that a number of Germans-came upon them and both made for their lines, but a machine-gun was turned upon them, and Signaller Joss fell. His companion managed to reach a gulley, where he lay until evening, when the Germans took him prisoner. As he was marched off he passed the spot where Joss lay, and saw he had been pierced through the temple by a bullet. The late John Joss was 21 years of age and had seen two year of active service.
